Every year a very special dance performance happens in the Hill Country of Austin, Texas. For three nights in April the students of Westlake High School mount a two-act dance spectacular that includes performances by student dancers, musicians, and singers.
Throughout the three-week run-up to the shows, more than a dozen students work one-on-one with Phil Gilbert, learning design, programming, and timecode concepts using the school's automated lighting system. By the end of each student's session they have programmed the lighting for one of the show's dance pieces from beginning to end.
Students get access to top-of-the-line lighting equipment from Martin, Clay Paky, Vari*Lite, and High End Systems.
